John Sheard, who also owns Cookin and Park Bench just down the street, opened Red Wagon in June of 2009. The opportunity opened up when retail space was made available due to the closing of Yankee Peddler, in the prime area of Madison Park. He helped his mother open a toy store in Port Townsend, Washington, many years ago. It just seemed the right fit for him, as well as the neighborhood, to open a toy store. Re-construction of the site began in early 2009 with the grand opening in July during Madison Park Days.
He wanted the toy store to be unique and not just toys, so you will find a mix of decor, music, jewelry and an extensive book section. The store also goes through a change of seasons, just like the weather in order to accommodate a greater variety of items. So if you come into Red Wagon in March it won’t look the same as it did in December. You can find that special gift for newborns on up. Even if you are a kid at heart you can find something for your inner child here.
John gives back generously to the community through auctions and special events throughout the year. The toy store offers a 10% discount to teachers and if John is in the store, you will usually see a free balloon going out the door with one of the younger visitors.
Red Wagon is located in historic Madison Park. This great neighborhood is within walking distance of a beautiful park, the beach on Lake Washington and many great local restaurants and shopping. For those who worry about parking in the area, there is plenty of parking available along with street parking. Come down and enjoy the area!
